James William Hulsman, 87, of Pine Street, Tamaqua, PA, died on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at his residence. He was the husband of Irene (nee Pritko) Hulsman to whom he would have been married 65 years in September. Born in Tamaqua on January 10, 1930, Jim was a son of the late James N. and Ethel (nee Storch) Hulsman. Having lived in Mahanoy City, PA until he was a teenager, he graduated from Tamaqua High School in 1947 and served in the Army during the Korean War. Jim was hired at 16 years of age by the Reading Railroad and was believed to be the youngest telegrapher. He continued his career with the railroad as a tower man, train dispatcher, chief train dispatcher, freight agent in Pottsville, and finally chief clerk in Cressona. Jim also worked briefly as a telegrapher for the CNJ railroad in the late 1950s. He was an avid railroad photographer; a member of the Reading Company and the Conrail Historical Societies; a fan of Roy Acuff and blue grass music; and a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tamaqua. Jim is survived by his wife, Irene; daughter, Jamie L. Hafer and her husband, Ray of Salt Point, New York; granddaughter, Valerie Paulson and her husband, Eric of Denver, Colorado; brother, Gary L. Hulsman of Weatherly, PA; sister, Joan C. Miller of Sellersville, PA; and nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a son, James W. Hulsman, Jr. Services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, July 10, 2017 in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 101 North Greenwood Street, Tamaqua with The Rev. Cindy White officiating. Interment in Sky View Memorial Park, Hometown, PA will follow services. There will be no calling hours.
